With burgers so good David Letterman once raved “Perhaps I’ve had as good, but never better than this,” the Workingman’s Friend has won the hearts (and stomachs) of near every customer who has walked through those unassuming doors on N. Belmont Street.
But on Friday, the Workingman’s Friend put up a vague Facebook post that had everyone in a panic.
The post wasn’t up for long before it was taken down and replaced with a simpler post stating the tavern would be closed until Tuesday.
When FOX59/CBS4 went down to 234 N. Belmont Street to seek answers, only a handwritten note on the door greeted inquiring minds.
Customers looking for a burger were just as surprised to pull up at the Workingman’s Friend and find the business dark and empty.
“There’s not a burger to be had today, so it’s very disappointing,” said prospective customer Abby Buckley.
On Facebook, many flocked to the comment section looking for answers.
But a reply from the Workingman’s Friend just raised more questions.
Hoosiers who drove out on Friday looking for lunch urged the owner to reconsider any sale or closure — at least if it meant losing access to the best burgers in town.
“Keep the doors open,” said Matt Graves. “The people of Indianapolis need a good burger.”
For now, questions have remained unanswered with the Workingman’s Friend only promising to “see everyone Tuesday.”
