Freezing temperatures affect people across Jackson metro

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Several local businesses and organizations have been impacted by the below-freezing temperatures in the Jackson-metro area.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the capital city is expected to see dangerous cold conditions over the next 24 hours.

The conditions have placed a hold on a major project on Interstate 55 in Jackson. The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) has paused the Pearl Street bridge project until temperatures surpass 40 degrees.

“It will impact some construction projects that involve the pouring of concrete. So, like on the I-55 bridge over the Pearl River, you cannot pour concrete below 40 degrees. It impacts the way the concrete sets and makes it weaker over time. These contractors don’t want to put their crews out overnight, if it’s, you know, 19 degrees. So, yes, it’s probably slowing down,” said Michael Flood, the Public Information Officer for MDOT.

With the freezing temperatures, hypothermia becomes a possibility if you’re out in the cold for too long. Shelters, like Champion Gym, have opened their doors to those in need. Organizations, including Shower Power and Atmos Energy, are working with the City of Jackson to provide hot meals and to keep people warm overnight.

The City of Jackson plans to keep Champion Gym open through Sunday morning.
