Athletes of the Week: Gracyn Meaux and Camille Davidson

MAURICE, La. (KLFY) — Seniors Gracyn Meaux and Camille Davidson led the North Vermilion Dreams dance team to its second consecutive national championship.

The pair won the Small Varsity Division II Game Day Championship at the UDA National Competition in Orlando for the second straight year.

Meaux said competing on the big stage was an unreal experience.

“It’s a 2-3 minute routine that we’ve worked on for months, just such a short snippet of all the work we’ve done and whenever you go on and you perform it, it’s just this magical feeling,” she said.

Davidson said winning their first national title “was probably the best thing we’ve ever experienced as a team.” Until it wasn’t.

“Coming back and winning it again was probably even more rewarding because you were able to showcase that it wasn’t a one-time thing, and you didn’t get lucky,” she said. “You have the ability and you were able to process and show that ability more than once.”

Davidson and Meaux have been on the dance team at North Vermilion High for four years but dance was part of their lives for much longer than that.

“My mom is actually my coach,” Davidson said. “So she started, I want to say, coaching in 2012 and I was six years old, so I’ve been around North Vermilion Dreams since I was six. Growing up around the team, I’ve always wanted to be a dream and incorporate that into my life.”

Meaux’s mom was also involved in the sport, so she grew up around dance.

“My mom coached her own dance team for about ten years, so I took my first steps at dancing practice like all of that,” Meaux said. “When I came into my seventh-grade year, being on the middle school team, I decided to take a chance on it, and they luckily took a chance on me and through that I really grew. Then when I got to high school and saw nationals, I just knew that was something I wanted to be a part of.”

Outside of sports, Meaux plays the flute in the band and likes to read. Davidson loves to go shopping, but they both are also involved in various organizations at North Vermilion.

After graduation, Meaux wants to attend Tulane and go into the medical field. Camille wants to attend UL and major in nursing.

Both say their biggest supporters are their pearents

“They really do push me to be my best and they’re really, really supportive of me and they’re always encouraging me and just reminding me that I can do it,” Meaux said. “I really do appreciate it.”

“They’ve spent a lot of time and money and have really dedicated their time and trust into me and what I enjoy doing,” Davidson said. “As well as Gracyn is also one of my biggest support systems. We’ve become a lot closer this past year. We are only two seniors and I’ve really been able to trust and rely on her whenever I need that extra support.”

They also hope to inspire the North Vermilion Dreams to achieve a three-peat of national titles.

“(It will take) a whole lot of practice and a whole lot of work,” Meaux said. “But more importantly, a very strong relationship with each other because I know I wouldn’t have been able to do it if I didn’t trust the girl dancing next to me.”
