Where Y’at this Weekend: Family Gras, Eagle Expo, Mystic Krewe of Barkus, Shorty Gras
NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — The first weekend of parades is upon us, as Carnival marches full speed ahead. Get ready for a family-friendly festival with a Mardi Gras-theme, a bald eagle nature adventure that’s an escape from the madness and a ball featuring one of hip hop’s biggest stars. Here are Where Y’at’s weekend picks!
First, get ready for a fantastic free Carnival party for all: Family Gras starts Friday, Feb. 21. Located across from Lakeside Shopping Center on Vets, Family Gras features an impressive entertainment lineup including Gary LeVox, Kansas and more. It combines parade viewing with family activities, an art market, and more.

Next, if you’re looking for a respite from Carnival, head to the Atchafalaya Basin this weekend for the 20th Annual Eagle Expo. Take part in boat and walking tours to see various birds and water fowl, including bald eagles. There’ll also be a Sunset Social Friday, Feb. 21 in Morgan City.
Next… wag for joy at the 32nd annual Mystic Krewe of Barkus parade which rolls on Sunday, Feb. 23. The krewe who’s theme this year is Vanity Fur: Barkus Rules the Runway, will kick off at 2 p.m. and roll for 15 blocks. The parade begins at Armstrong park and continues through the French Quarter.
Finally, on Saturday night, Feb. 22, Shorty Gras takes over Mardi Gras World with an all-star lineup featuring Ja Rule, Trombone Shorty and special guest BIG BOI. This high-energy celebration is after the Krewe of Freret parade, when floats, marching bands and dance krewes will arrive for the party.
