Tangipahoa Parish deputies search for escaped work release inmate

TANGIPAHOA PARISH, La. (WGNO) — The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office has asked for the public’s help locating an inmate who allegedly walked off a work site Thursday morning, Feb. 20.

Deputies said around 7:30 a.m. they were alerted that 35-year-old Markel Alexander was seen leaving his job site in the 500 block of Railroad Avenue in Kentwood after getting into a black sedan.

Alexander is a New Orleans native and had been serving a four year sentence on charges of possession of distribution with intent distribute and resisting an officer.

He was enrolled in a program that allowed Department of Corrections inmates to work jobs outside the jail.

TPSO deputies said they are working with surrounding law enforcement agencies to actively search for Alexander.
