Sloppy morning with valley snow, showers expected through the afternoon

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — Happy Thursday, Utah! A quick-moving storm will deliver mountain and valley snow to Northern and Central Utah overnight with healthy accumulations.

The snow levels drop to the valley floor, turning rain into snow and creating tough travel conditions on the roads. Due to a heavier band of precipitation, the original Winter Weather Advisory for the Northern Wasatch Front was upgraded to a Winter Storm Warning.

When all is said and done, Weber and Davis Counties could see 4 to 7″ with higher numbers on the benches in this area. The Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 5 p.m. Winter Weather Advisories have been issued and remain in effect for a slew of areas until 5 p.m.

Both mountains and valleys in Northern and Central Utah are impacted by these advisories, including Cache Valley, the Tooele/Rush Valleys, Salt Lake County, Utah County, the Wasatch Back, the Wasatch Mountains, Western Uintas, Wasatch Plateau, Central Mountains, and the Book Cliffs. Winter travel conditions are to be expected through the evening.

The mountains will see a total of between 5 to 10 inches of snow, with the Cottonwoods possibly picking up a quick 6 to 12 inches from this storm, with the highest peaks of the Cottonwoods and Western Uintas leaning closer to 15 inches. This won’t be an abundance of moisture for the central mountains with a few inches expected.

Valley locations could pick up as high as 3 inches along the Wasatch Front; benches can go anywhere from 2 to 6 inches and mountain valleys could see 3 to 7 inches. Locally, higher amounts could be expected with the highest totals coming from the Northern Wasatch Front.

High temperatures will climb near average with upper 30s and low 40s expected along the Wasatch Front, a mix of 40s in Central Utah, and low 60s in St. George. Showers will continue with our northwest flow throughout the day, but drier air starts to push in with a ridge of high-pressure building for the close of the work week and into the weekend.
