Coma survivor dies after ingesting fentanyl; suspect in custody

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — Rockford Police arrested Ricky Mcgowens, 46, for allegedly delivering fentanyl to a hospital patient.

The victim had been a patient since October 14, 2024, and for a period of time was in a coma because of a car accident.

On November 11, 2024, officers responded to St. Anthony Hospital for a drug overdose incident. Authorities found a white powder in the woman’s room and it tested probable for cocaine, according to court records.

After investigating the victim’s cell phone, officials determined Mcgowens delivered the white substance. Surveillance footage shows the suspect walking towards the woman’s room and leaving shortly after.

A nurse told police she heard the victim say she needed a visitor to get her $140 to pay a bill.

The woman’s blood was tested and had fentanyl in it, according to court documents.

Medical records indicated she had a terminal illness, officers reported.

Mcgowens is charged with drug-induced homicide and delivering fentanyl.
