“There’ll be a lot of roads going on,” said DeCourt. “It will be a war zone. Sometimes that’s what it takes.”
$17.1 million in funds was collected in the reallocated tax from the sewer department and is dedicated to road repairs. In the ten months since it was approved, officials determined what roads in each city district needed immediate repairs.
“It took them ten months,” said DeCourt. “They analyzed all the roads, put the contract documents together. I think the ten months went fairly quickly.”
With a limited amount of funds, Decourt said, not every road in New Iberia will be repaired. He is aiming for about 30% of the city roads to be repaired for this project.
Mayor DeCourt said the first bid for asphalt overlay will come out March 13, repairs are scheduled to begin in May.
“If the next mayor can, you know, pick up the ball when I’m out of here in four years and continue and figure out a way to find something as we have done, I think we’re going to finally, you know, be over the hill,” he said.
