NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Officials with the City of New Orleans have announced that they are activating the city’s freeze plan ahead of predicted cold temperatures on Wednesday, Feb. 19.
across Southeast Louisiana.
City officials said the National Weather Service is predicting “feels like” temperatures at or below freezing overnight.
WGNO meteorologists predict that lows will be in the low to mid 20s and 30s
City officials said those needing shelter during the cold weather event can visit the following locations:
- Ozanam Inn at 2239 Poydras St. at 4 p.m.
- New Orleans Mission at 1130 Oreatha Castle Haley Blvd. at 4 p.m.
- The Salvation Army at 4526 S. Claiborne Ave. at 4 p.m.
- Low Barrier Shelter at 1530 Gravier St. at 2 p.m.
Additionally, the city offered the following tips to help residents stay warm and safe:
- Stay inside, in the heat during extreme cold weather
- Wear layers, hats, gloves and carry a cell phone when going outside
- Check on children, older adults and neighbors
- Bring pets indoors
- Don’t leave space heaters unattended
- Never use an oven or stove to heat your home
- Make sure your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are working
- Have a fire extinguisher and know how to use it
