Nearly 30 Dutch Bros locations in Utah — from Payson to Logan — are offering “Dr. Dutch” dirty soda drinks. There are three standard flavor combinations available:
On the Dutch Bros app, users can also pick a “Build Your Own” version of the drink, adding up to four flavored syrups to the Dr. Dutch base soda. There are sugar-free options for the flavorings, but the app notifies users that the base soda itself is not sugar-free.
“We know how passionate Utah residents are about dirty sodas, so we wanted to bring our version of the drink to them,” Alissan Speidel, communications specialist for Dutch Bros, told ABC4.com.
The dirty sodas are available in three sizes — 16oz/small, 24oz/medium, and 32oz/large — and have various toppings and “mix-ins,” including strawberry boba, whipped cream, sweet cream, or a soft top.
The exact flavor of Dr. Dutch has not been disclosed, but an employee at a Utah Dutch Bros location told ABC4.com that the soda is the coffee chain’s own version of Dr Pepper (which may be hinted at with the “Dr.” title).
ABC4.com staff tried all three standard flavors, confirming that the primary flavor profile tastes similar to Dr Pepper. Some of the flavored syrups were stronger than others.
Speidel said that, as of Feb. 18, the chain does not offer options for diet soda as a base soda. No other base soda options are available for now.
Speidel also explained that the dirty soda is a regional offering, and there are no plans to expand nationally at this time — although the app and at least one user have confirmed the sodas are also available in Tennessee.
Simply put, a dirty soda is a mixed drink.
It’s made by starting with a base of a regular soda (think of all your favorite brands) and adding in flavored syrups, juices, or fruit purees — and, in some Utah soda shops, they add in popping boba or gummy candy.
Dirty soda has been around since the 2010s and began taking social media by storm in 2022 after singer and actress Olivia Rodrigo posed with a drink from a Utah-based dirty soda shop.
Utah is often considered to be one of the most popular locations for the drinks.
One shop, called Sodalicious, has nearly 20 locations in Utah. The popular shop Swig — the very shop Olivia Rodrigo got her drink from — has roughly 40 locations open in Utah alone. Another shop, called Fiiz, has just under 50 operating locations in Utah.
