Court docs: Muncie woman throws baby strapped in car seat after calling the infant ugly

MUNCIE, Ind. — Court documents reveal a confrontation between two women in a Muncie Walmart parking lot led to one of the women calling a baby “ugly” and throwing the child while it was strapped into a car seat.

Shamesha Hendrix, 36, of Muncie was arrested on Feb. 15 on a preliminary charge of battery of a person under the age of 14, a Level 6 felony.

According to court documents, the incident took place at the southside Walmart in Muncie on Jan. 17. Hendrix and the victim were known to each other with the victim telling police the pair had children with the same father. Hendrix is accused of accosting the victim and starting a fight at the Walmart.

The victim had a one-month-old child in her shopping cart. The baby was strapped into a car seat. According to the victim, Hendrix said she wanted to see the “ugly baby” and ended up picking up the car seat and throwing it back into the cart.

The car seat landed on its side but the infant was strapped in and didn’t fall out, police said. EMS did check on the baby and said the young girl appeared fine but recommended a check-up at the hospital.

Hendrix fled Walmart before police arrived on scene. She wasn’t arrested until nearly a month later on Feb. 15.

The Delaware County Prosecutor’s Office will determine what, if any, charges are filed in this case.
