Chicago police said the suspect approached a staff member, identified as a 56-year-old man, pulled out a “sharp object” and stabbed the man in the chest area. Another staff member was also injured and the hospital then went on lockdown for a couple of hours.
Both staff members are in stable condition, but one was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center for treatment.
A hospital spokesperson said the offender was immediately taken into custody by the hospital’s security team. The spokesperson also released the following statement on the incident:
“Violence against healthcare workers is on the rise, and it is unacceptable. No one should have to fear for their safety while doing their job. This issue transcends physical harm—it impacts the emotional and psychological well-being of our entire team, and ultimately affects the quality of care we are able to provide. While we remain committed to providing the best care possible to our patients, we must also acknowledge that health care environments should be safe spaces for both patients and providers.” – Provident Hospital Spokesperson
Out of respect for the privacy of the Provident Hospital staff members, the hospital spokesperson said they will not be releasing any further information at this time, and any questions about the investigation can be directed to CPD.
