GRADD says late last year, it made “significant changes” to the meal menu for home-delivered and congregate meal recipients. For several years, seniors receiving meals at GRADD’s senior centers or nutrition sites had the same five-week rotation of meals. After hearing seniors’ concerns about the repetitive menu, GRADD says it took action.
GRADD says it “advocated” for a switch to the state dietician menu, which 13 other area development districts also use. This menu offers seasonal changes every three months, providing more variety. On July 1, 2024, GRADD, in collaboration with its caterer Five Star, began serving the new meals. The new menu includes popular choices such as salads, pasta, fish and cheeseburgers, along with fresh fruits and vegetables.
“I am so proud of the positive changes we have made towards our meal programs that benefit so many of our seniors across our communities each day,” says GRADD Community Services Manager Amber Gebhard. “This decision aligned perfectly with our mission at GRADD, to advocate on behalf of our seniors, and make sure their voices are heard. Improvement in their quality of life occurs by meeting their daily nutritional needs.”
Officials say senior citizen and nutrition centers have reported increased participation due to the improved food options. Just one month after the new menu was introduced, the Senior Community Center of Owensboro Daviess County welcomed 48 new seniors and 17 returning seniors who hadn’t visited in a while.
A spokesperson for GRADD says on July 1, 2024, the Department of Aging and Independent Living (DAIL) implemented a calcium choice across the state for the meal programs. Previously, only white milk was served, but now seniors can choose between chocolate and white milk with the hope to also add calcium fortified orange juice in the future.
