ABBEVILLE, La. (
KLFY) — The community of Abbeville is celebrating the opening of a brand-new farmer’s market where vendors, producers and farmers showcased their products to the public.
The Vermilion Venue Farmer’s Market opens every Sunday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Farmers provide necessary vegetables, while vendors in attendance provide products like clothes, haircare products and furniture.
Grant Baudoin, the owner of the Vermilion Venue, said the market will improve the parish’s local economy and is a commendable step in fostering sustainable agriculture and unity in Abbeville and surrounding areas.
“We decided to do our farmer’s market in Abbeville because, as everyone knows, Abbeville is the seat of Vermilion Parish, so we do hope that surrounding parishes come to support our local patrons, and yeah it was a very good day,” said Baudoin. “All of it is home grown vegetables, grown from our local farmers.”
Mathew Primeaux, a vendor with L&M Primeaux Farms, said he and his wife began their farming business a few years ago, pickling vegetables, such as peppers, watermelon, and mirlitons.
“We started growing a garden a few years ago and we had things that were left over and decided to start pickling them to eliminate the waste that we had, and then we grew it into a business, and we just got started again probably a couple of months ago,” said Primeaux.
Baudoin said the turnout for the market was a huge success and he looks forward to the weeks to come.
“It was a very good turnout,” he said. “We’ve had an incredible amount of customers and we’re very thankful that our parish came out today, we’re going to be here every week, and we’d love to get as much support as we can get.”
