Clouds will be on the increase across the northern half of the state with a slight chance for a few snow showers in the northern mountains. The winds will also be increasing across the southern half of the state today, and will likely increase across the rest of Utah this evening through the overnight hours.
A stronger system arrives Friday, bringing a cold front and more moisture. Temperatures will plummet with the incoming cold air with numbers dropping below average, meaning valley rain showers will likely switch to snow showers for some by Friday afternoon across northern and central Utah. A few isolated showers are also expected in southwestern Utah onFriday evening.
Right now, snowfall totals look to average in the 6-12″ range for our northern mountains, 8-16″ for the Cottonwoods, 2-4″ for the Wasatch Back, Plateau and Central mountains, and 1-2″ for the higher benches. Most valley locations will only see a trace to possibly up to an inch in isolated areas.
Any lingering light snow showers will quickly clear by early Saturday morning, with cloud cover easing into Saturday afternoon.
The big story will be the big drop in temperatures that is expected into the weekend. Friday afternoon will feature temperatures climbing into the 50s, before dropping quickly behind the cold front into the 30s for Friday afternoon.
This weekend will feature highs only in the 30s with overnight lows in the 10s and 20s across north and central Utah. Southern Utah will see a return to highs in the 50s and lows in the 20s and 30s this weekend.
The cold air looks to stick around through most of next week with our next active weather pattern shaping up in time for Valentine’s Day.
