Pike County Schools closed indefinitely as communities begin flood recovery

KENTUCKY (FOX 56) — Kentucky’s heavy rain on Saturday led to flooding in multiple Kentucky counties.

The flood waters left many roads inaccessible while causing damages across the state. On Sunday, Gov. Andy Beshear put Kentucky under an emergency disaster declaration.

“Kentucky is still experiencing widespread impacts from the severe weather. We need everyone to be aware that conditions are dangerous, and folks need to stay off the roads in areas with high water,” Gov. Andy Beshear said on X.

Homes have since been evacuated, with hundreds lodged in Kentucky State Parks.

County officials have taken things into their own hands as well.

LATEST KENTUCKY NEWS:

On Sunday, Pike County Public Schools announced that classes were canceled until further notice.

“We pray for the safety of our students, families, staff, and community. We will assess the situation when possible and update the community. Praying for everyone’s safety,” the district said on Facebook.

Pike County Judge Executive Ray Jones has also signed an order setting a curfew from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. for all areas of the county impacted by flooding or other storm damage.

The order will remain in effect until a new order is issued.

Other districts have announced closures as well; closures can be found below or at FOX 56 News.

Beshear said the storm and flood waters have taken 11 lives, with that number still at risk of growing.
