New Walking and Biking Greenway Project Approved By BOC

The Lakeland Board of Commissioners (BOC) has approved funding for the design of the Scott Creek Greenway Project, a new multi-use path aimed at enhancing outdoor recreation and connectivity within the community.

The proposed greenway will accommodate walkers, runners, and non-motorized cyclists, linking the Cool Springs path to the Brody Townsend Athletic Park (formerly the Lakeland Athletic Complex) on Memphis-Arlington Road. The path will also extend across Memphis-Arlington Road to connect with Lakeland Town Square, further expanding the city’s trail system.

The path will go from Cool Springs all the way to Lakeland Town Square.

The design phase, which comes with a $274,753 price tag, was thoroughly reviewed by city staff and commissioners. However, funding concerns were alleviated, with Commissioner Jim Atkinson confirming that the project is already accounted for in the city’s current budget.

“This is already appropriated in this year’s budget, and we expect grant revenues to pay for 80% of the project,” said Commissioner Atkinson.

With funding secured and the design process underway, the Scott Creek Greenway Project marks another step in Lakeland’s commitment to expanding outdoor recreational opportunities and enhancing connectivity for residents.
