2 dead after a snowmobile crashes into brush on Blue Lake

WHITLEY COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) — Sunday the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) issued a press release with more details as to how two died in a snowmobile crash on Blue Lake.

An initial report from Whitley County Dispatch told WANE 15 that the crash occurred on Blue Lake, which was frozen at the time of the crash, just after 12:30 a.m. Saturday. In this initial report, two people, a teen girl and an adult man, had been pronounced dead at the scene.

The names of the people were released in the report from Whitley County, but it was unclear if next of kin had been notified.

According to the release from the DNR, the crash occurred at 11:45 Friday night, but officers were called to the scene around 12:20 a.m. Saturday.

According to the release, initial investigation revealed that 44-year-old Robert Baker and a teen girl were traveling on a snowmobile when they crashed into brush along the shoreline of the lake.

The two were thrown from the snowmobile. Lifesaving efforts were attempted at the scene but both were pronounced dead.

The investigation into the accident is still ongoing.

Assisting agencies include the Whitely County Sheriff’s Department, the Churubusco Police Department, Smith Township Fire Department, Indiana State Police, and the Whitley County Coroner’s Office.
