Sunday forecast: Lake-effect snow early, then bitter, dangerously cold conditions move into Chicagoland

Chicagoland is headed into the deep freezer this week, with bitter and dangerously cold conditions moving into the area.

Lake-effect snow remains in Chicagoland on Sunday morning, but not too much accumulation is expected, with maybe an inch or two in lakeside areas, at the most. The snow will then gradually move east into Northwest Indiana.

Then, it’s bitter cold air, with northwest winds from Canada plunging wind-chill values below zero overnight into Monday morning.

Real temperatures Monday will stay in the single digits, maybe reaching around 10 degrees.

Ahead of the coming frigid weather, the National Weather Service has issued a Cold Weather Advisory for some of Chicagoland’s northern and western locations, in effect from midnight until 11 a.m. Monday

Temps ranged in the mid-20s early Sunday morning, with blustery winds up to 30 to 35 miles per hour already around Chicagoland creating single-digit wind chills in some locations.

The bitter cold is expected to remain in Chicagoland through at least the middle of this week, with temps finally starting to climb back into the mid-20s by the end of the week and into next weekend.

Looking ahead

The extended outlook calls for bitter cold to continue into Tuesday, with temps around minus-5 expected for the morning, then partly sunny skies and highs near 10 in the afternoon.

There’s a chance for snow showers on Wednesday, with temps in the lower teens by the afternoon. Temps will finally warm Thursday and Friday, up to near 20 with partly sunny skies.
