PennDOT reduces speed limits on highways across central Pennsylvania

(WHTM) — As the area deals with a winter storm, PennDOT had reduced speed limits on area highways Saturday.

PennDOT advises drivers to avoid unnecessary travel, but if you had to head out, many major highways were at 45mph until Saturday evening.

Highways impacted included the entire length of Interstate 83, Interstate 283, PA 283 and PA 581.

Also included is U.S. 15 from Maryland to 581, U.S. 22 from U.S. 322 to Interstate 81, U.S. 30 from U.S. 15 to PA 23, U.S. 222 from U.S. 30 to PA 272/581, and U.S. 322 from I-83 to Larkspur Drive.

Speed limits had also been reduced to 45mph on Interstate 81 in Schuylkill County and on Interstate 78 in Berks County. Empty commercial vehicles were prohibited on Interstate 81 in Schuylkill County as well.

Officials remind drivers to allow space when driving near plows and they suggest packing an emergency kit for your vehicle.
