Krewe of Oshun parade brings Mardi Gras excitement to North Baton Rouge

BATON ROUGE, La. — The spirit of Mardi Gras filled the streets of Scotlandville as the Krewe of Oshun Parade rolled through North Baton Rouge, marking the official start of the Carnival season. Now in its fifth year, the parade brought music, dancing, and vibrant energy, drawing large crowds eager to celebrate.

The sounds of trumpets and drums set the tone as colorful floats made their way down the route, showering excited spectators with beads and trinkets.

“I’m very excited to see so many people from across Baton Rouge coming to our backyard,” said Anthony Kenney, the parade’s grand marshal. “Not only to celebrate our heritage and culture but just to have a good time and kick off the Mardi Gras season.”

Attendees of all ages lined the streets, cheering and reaching for their chance to catch beads and souvenirs.

“It feels great to be out here,” said AJ Cotton, an excited parade-goer. “I love parades. They always throw things out for you to collect.”

For many, the Krewe of Oshun has become a cherished tradition that fosters joy, culture, and unity in the community.

“It has a great impact on Baton Rouge because we need to learn to unify as one,” said Kim Hardy, another attendee.

With music in the streets and beads flying through the air, the Krewe of Oshun continues to keep the Mardi Gras spirit alive in Baton Rouge.

“We had a long year with a snowmageddon and different storms, but to kick off Mardi Gras with the spirit of Louisiana, right here in North Baton Rouge, is special,” Kenney added. “I’m very excited that in Scotlandville, we’re leading the way for the Mardi Gras holiday.”

As the parade came to a close, the excitement and energy lingered, leaving attendees eager for more Carnival celebrations in the weeks ahead.
