Krewe of Harambee parade, $6K scholarship awards and more

SHREVEPORT, La. (KTAL/KMSS) — The Krewe of Harambee rolls at 1 p.m., celebrating diversity, stunning floats, energetic bands, and community organization.

It will feature vibrant floats, marching bands, and a powerful tribute to Dr. King’s dream while showcasing the Krewe of Harambee masks—individually handcrafted and adorned with dazzling paint, glitter, and feathers.

According to the news release, the masks, paired with Krewe’s signature beads, have become cherished keepsakes that embody Krewe’s unique fusion of Mardi Gras traditions and African culture.

“Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a visionary leader who dreamed of a world united in equality and justice,” said Captain Cynthia Pearson. “As we reflect on his legacy and celebrate our 25th anniversary, we believe it is important to give back to our communities through scholarships, empowering the next generation to carry forward the pursuit of a fairer society.”

Staging begins at 10:30 a.m. at the Municipal Auditorium.

Krewe of Harambee Parade Route: The lineup starts at the corner of Milam Street and Common Street, extends east onto Edwards Street, and turns left onto Texas Street. When the parade reaches Common Street, it will roll north to Sprague Street and end at Douglas Street.

The City of Shreveport said the parade route will close at approximately noon for the 1 p.m. roll time for the safety of the residents gathering.
