Hazy sunshine Monday afternoon, colder air arrives Tuesday

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — Happy Monday, Utah! Temperatures started off on a very cold note in the 10s and 20s. Plenty of sunshine will help to boost those temperatures back into the mid to upper 30s for northern Utah, and temperatures likely rebounding to the lower 60s for southern Utah.

During the day on Tuesday, another cold front will sweep through the area, bringing a few scattered flurries to the valleys and a few snow showers to the mountains. This system will not have a ton of moisture so only light mountain accumulations will be expected. Winds will pick up out of the northwest behind this system, leading to a colder feel for Tuesday afternoon and evening. Wednesday morning will be the coldest, with valley lows in the teens and single digits. Mountains will likely drop down to near 0° Wednesday morning with wind chills below zero to kick off the day.

We will begin to warm things up on Thursday as a southerly flow kicks in. This will allow for moisture to surge in, bringing gusty southwest winds and more widespread moisture to the state. Snow looks to break out across the state Thursday afternoon into the evening hours, with the potential for a rain/snow mix as far south as St. George. On Friday, we’ll see a slow shift to northwest flow where orographic lift will enhance snow showers over the higher elevations.

Snow levels look to be somewhere around 4000-5000 feet up north and a bit higher in the south. Mountain snowfall looks healthy right now with 1-2’+ of snow from Thursday through Saturday, with some spots seeing even more. Valley locations could also see some accumulations, but the snow levels, along with rates will determine how much will stay on the ground.

Stay tuned! We’ll keep you posted on the latest developments in our 4Warn Weather forecast both on-air and online, we are Good4Utah!
