SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — The flag presented during the performance of the national anthem at Super Bowl LIX — between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles — was made by a Utah-based flag company.

The flag, which reached a final measurement of 100 feet by 50 feet, was put together by the team at Colonial Flag, based in Sandy, Utah.

“It’s very special to us, having something that we’ve produced here in Utah — in Sandy — on such a big, global stage,” Jacob Swenson, chief operating officer of Colonial Flag, told ABC4.com.

Swenson said the flag-making process is time-consuming — especially because everything is done by hand.

“We are cutting the fabric, measuring it by hand,” Swenson said. “We’re able to sew it, do the mathematical calculations, and then we take it over to Mountain America Expo Center…”

While the flag is at the expo center, workers do their final trimming and measurements before sending the flag off to its final destination.

Swenson said the process to create the flag unfurled at the 2025 Super Bowl took about eight weeks from start to finish. He said the math had to be perfect, and all the stars had to be lined up just right.

“From getting the fabric in, getting our measurements done, getting the initial cutting and sewing…” Swenson said. “The star field takes the longest — we have to make sure each star’s placed properly, and it’s hard to do on a small table when the star field is as big as it is.”

Colonial Flag supplies more than 56,000 flags each year for Independence Day (and Pioneer Day) parades in Utah. The company has clients around the world — and also created the flag presented during the 2024 Super Bowl.

“Being able to help provide that little piece of our labor of love to millions of people is pretty incredible to watch,” Swenson said.
