Road alerts issued ahead of Thursday Utah snowstorm

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — A mix of rain and snow is set to make its way into the Beehive State on Thursday afternoon, bringing with it some concerns about driving conditions.

The Utah Department of Transportation issued a “Road Weather Alert” on Thursday morning ahead of the multi-day storm that is expected to hit statewide.

UDOT said the main concern along the I-15 corridor would be from the afternoon into the evening on Thursday, specifically from Bountiful northward. Meanwhile, the highways south of Davis County are expected to see light snowfall and slightly warming temperatures, which UDOT said will keep any widespread or significant road snow from building up.

“While generally light to moderate snowfall rates are expected, some higher elevation routes across the entire state will see heavier rates, leading to heavy mountain road snow Thursday into Friday,” UDOT warned. “By Thursday night, warmer temps move into much of the state and raise the snow levels, with many Wasatch Front/urban corridor areas seeing rain or a rain/snow mix through Friday.”

UDOT said the precipitation could then change back to all snow late Friday night.

In addition to the wet road conditions, Utah drivers could also expect some strong winds. I-80 in Tooele County, for example, is expected to see brief gusts that could hit 40-50 miles per hour. Winds throughout the state are expected to reach speeds of 30-40 miles per hour.
