HARLAN, Ky. (FOX 56)—Multiple highways were closed Friday afternoon due to blocking caused by mudslides and flooding with heavy rain pouring down on central and southern Kentucky.
The Kentucky State Police Department (KSP) and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) have posted warnings about the closures for the public’s safety.
Around 1:20 p.m. on Saturday, the KYTC told FOX 56 that a mudslide blocked off KY 522 in the Rosspoint community at the 1.8-mile marker. All lanes of the road are blocked, and there are downed powerlines in the area, officials said.
If you spot a downed power line, Kentucky Utilities (KU) officials said to stay away from them and call (800) 981-0600. KU customers can report and track outages through the mobile app and lge-ku.com/storm.
KSP Trooper Jacobs posted on Facebook around 1:30 p.m. that US 421 at the Harlan-Leslie County line is closed, with trees reportedly blocking the road.
More information about the mudslides and road closures will be released as it becomes available. For the latest weather information, download the FOX 56 Weather Authority App.
