Jon Batiste’s Super Bowl piano now at New Orleans Museum of Art

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — If you watched the Super Bowl, you most likely noticed the grand piano which Grammy Award winner Jon Batiste played while performing “The Star Spangled Banner.” Now, the piano has a temporary home at the New Orleans Museum of Art, and you can go check it out.

The grand piano played by Jon Batiste is a super addition to the New Orleans Museum of Art‘s already super collection.

“Appropriate for NOMA, where we always work to engage the arts through music and art,” Susan Taylor, executive director of New Orleans Museum of Art said.

This painted piano tells a story.

“It was specifically built by Yamaha for Jon. It was painted by his wife Suleika Jaouad, who’s an artist and a writer. She decided at the very last moment it was something she should do and wanted to do, and she completed it in 36 hours,” Taylor said.

One of the most beautiful things you’ll notice about the piano is that butterflies are fluttering around.

“A symbol of metamorphosis,” she said.

Jon’s wife Suleika is battling cancer and art is a form of her therapy.

“They are so connected, and this piano is a symbol of making something for the both of them,” Taylor said.

NOMA feels honored that this “art with heart” is now here for everyone to enjoy.

“Suleika and Jon talked about it and agreed to have it here for the time being. A lasting memory, and I think it will be a reminder of Jon’s incredible performance. His rendition of the ‘Star Spangled Banner’ was so moving,” Taylor said.

No word yet on how long the piano will stay at NOMA, but they are planning upcoming concerts soon.
