Abilene-Taylor County Public Health District to stop refugee program due to federal funding freeze

ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – The Abilene-Taylor County Public Health District is stopping their program to help refugees due to a federal funding freeze.

Director of Public Health Annette Lerma confirmed the closure of their Refugee Clinic Friday, saying the program will remain in place temporarily to help refugees already here.

“This extension ensures that every refugee who has already arrived in Abilene receives the necessary medical screening to protect our community,” Lerma explains.

Lerma says that the program’s closure is a direct result of a funding freeze from the U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants.

“In light of this development and considering the city’s current budget constraints, we have temporarily suspended our operations until the federal funder can guarantee payment for the services rendered,” Lerma explains.
