SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — A 7-year-old girl was flown to a Utah hospital with a gunshot wound to the head after a Wyoming mother reportedly shot her four daughters before turning the gun on herself, according to the Big Horn County Sheriff’s Office.
A woman called 911 on the afternoon of Monday, Feb. 10 to report her children had been shot in the home, and she told officials where her daughters’ bodies could be found. The caller then said she would be able to be found in an upstairs bedroom after saying “she was going to do the same to herself,” officials said.
The sheriff’s office said multiple attempts were made to keep the caller on the line until units arrived at the scene, but the caller said it was “too late” and the call was disconnected. Resources from several agencies responded to the home in Byron, Wyoming, within minutes.
When officials arrived at the scene, they located two deceased girls, ages 2 and 9, and two girls who were still alive, ages 2 and 7. All children had gunshot wounds to the head, and the 2-year-old who was initially found alive later died from her injuries.
Officials also located a 32-year-old woman — later confirmed to be the 911 caller and the mother of the children — in the home. She had a single gunshot wound to the head, and she was showing “signs of life,” according to the sheriff’s office.
The surviving 7-year-old girl was taken to North Big Horn Hospital in an ambulance. She was later flown to a Utah hospital for care where doctors are assessing the damage to her head, according to a GoFundMe page that has been set up for the family.
The 32-year-old mother was also taken to North Big Horn Hospital, after which she was provided advanced life support. Officials have not released further information about the condition of the mother or the 7-year-old girl.
“Please note that this is an open and ongoing investigation and not all details are available to be released,” the sheriff’s office said in a Tuesday press release. “Our hearts and prayers go out to all those who are affected by this extremely horrible and tragic incident.”
Two fundraisers have been set up, with one supporting Wyoming family members, and another fundraiser supporting family in Utah.
The Utah family released a statement asking for space and privacy, saying updates on Olivia’s condition will be posted on the GoFundMe page.
“We want to thank everyone for all their kind thoughts, requests for updates on Olivia, support, donations and prayers for our family during this time. What we are going through is unimaginable and indescribable,” the statement read.
