CHICAGO (WGN) — After an offseason-long stalemate between agent Scott Boras and other teams around Major League Baseball, All-Star third baseman Alex Bregman has passed over the North Siders to call Boston home for the foreseeable future.

As reported by The Athletic’s Chandler Rome, Bregman and the Boston Red Sox are in agreement on a 3-year deal worth $120 million. The contract contains opt-outs after each year.

In nine seasons with the Houston Astros, Bregman made two All-Star teams (2018-19), won a Silver Slugger (2019) and a Gold Glove award (2024), and finished runner-up in the 2019 American League MVP race to the Los Angeles Angels’ Mike Trout.

The move comes after an off-season where the North Siders completed deals to acquire a pair of Bregman’s former teammates.

Two weeks ago, the Cubs completed a trade for Astros late-inning reliever Ryan Pressly, who is primed to compete for the club’s closer role after notching 90 saves and an AL All-Star team selection from 2021-23.

Then two-and-a-half months earlier, the North Siders completed a mega-deal to land them Houston All-Star right fielder Kyle Tucker, in exchange for third baseman Isaac Paredes, right-handed starting pitcher Hayden Wesneski and Cam Smith—one of the Cubs’ top infield prospects.

Tucker is heading into his age 28 season. After taking over starting right field duties for the Astros in 2021, he averaged 5.3 WAR, 28 home runs, 29 doubles, 90 RBI and 20 stolen bases per season from 2021 to 2024. Tucker earned three All-Star team selections, a Silver Slugger and a Gold Glove award during that stretch.

The North Siders take the diamond for their first spring training game on Feb. 20 at the Los Angeles Dodgers. Their first spring training game at Sloan Park takes place the next day, also against the Dodgers, with first pitch set for 2:05 p.m. CST.
