United Airlines flight returns to Chicago due to cockpit windshield problem

CHICAGO (WGN) — An outbound United Airlines flight had to make an emergency return to Chicago shortly after takeoff Wednesday afternoon.

According to a company spokesperson, United Flight 1879 from Chicago to Los Cabos, Mexico returned to Chicago shortly after departure due to an issue with the cockpit windshield.

United said the flight landed safely and was met by emergency services as a precaution before it taxied to the gate and passengers deplaned. No one was injured during the incident.

After further investigation, United also said there was no evidence of fire found onboard flight 1879.

“We appreciate the quick action of our crew to keep our passengers and employees safe and we’ve arranged for a new aircraft to take customers to their destination,” the spokesperson said.

United said the jet in operation was a Boeing 737-800 and there were 156 passengers with six crewmates onboard.
