
The high temperature was reached just after midnight in the middle to upper 20s, but the daytime maximum temperature only reached 18 degrees despite the day’s unlimited sunshine.
Gusty west winds made it feel much colder. By early evening, wind chills dipped below zero and were predicted to stay there through Friday morning.
Contributing to the late season chill is an expansive U.S. snowpack. More than half the lower 48 is now covered by snow, among the highest so far, this entire winter.
Wednesday’s snowfall put a small dent in Chicago’s snow drought but the tallies are still significantly below normal.
