Second person charged in death of 12-year-old girl in Calumet Heights

CHICAGO — A second person has been charged in the shooting death of a 12-year-old girl in the Calumet Heights neighborhood.

Tyler Wright, 19, faces one felony count of child endangerment resulting in death.

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, Wright was already on pretrial release for an unrelated weapons case.

Police said preliminary investigation indicated that the girl was struck by gunfire Sunday night inside a residence on the 9200 block of South Harper Avenue.

She was transported to Comer Children’s Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

The medical examiner has identified the girl as Dalilah Batey.

Police said Wright invited a group of kids, between the ages of 12 and 14, over to his home. The Sun-Times reports the kids were smoking weed, drinking alcohol and playing with guns.

According to the Sun-Times, Dalilah was sitting on the floor as the others were sitting on the bed and playing with the gun, when it discharged — striking Dalilah above the right eye.

A 14-year-old boy has also been charged with one felony count of involuntary manslaughter in the girl’s death.
