Get REAL ID compliant! Deadline approaching for Louisiana residents

SHREVEPORT, La. (KTAL/KMSS) – The Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles reminds drivers of an important date that could impact summer air travel.

On May 7, 2025, federal agencies will only accept the Real ID for official purposes.

Real ID-compliant driver’s licenses or ID cards display a gold circle with a star cutout in the top right corner.

The OMV encourages all Louisiana residents to consider getting a REAL ID-compliant credential when renewing their license or ID cards. Residents not eligible for renewal can upgrade by applying for a duplicate license or identification card that is REAL ID-compliant.

“Louisiana is behind the curve in compliance rates, and we expect our field offices and our partnering Public Tag Agents to see an influx of residents as we approach the May 7 enforcement date,” stated OMV Commissioner Dan Casey. “Do not wait until the last minute to get your license or ID card REAL ID-compliant.”

ID cards and driver’s licenses that are not REAL ID-compliant will not be accepted by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) at airport security checkpoints. Residents who choose not to get the REAL ID may use a valid passport or other acceptable form of federal identification to board domestic flights, access certain federal buildings and military bases, and enter nuclear power plants.

Louisiana residents can visit the OMV REAL ID virtual expert LOUIE to learn the necessary documentation to obtain a REAL ID before they visit an OMV field office or public tag agent. Appointments are required.

Even if you are using LA Wallet at participating airports that accept it, REAL ID-compliant credentials are required to utilize LA Wallet at Louis Armstrong International Airport (MSY) and others.
