The fire broke out around 3:35 a.m. Thursday at Fountain Jordan Shepard Funeral Home Inc., located at 418 South Cicero Avenue.
Chicago Fire Department spokesperson Larry Langford said the cause of the fire was determined to be electrical in nature, and appears to have started in the break room.
The fire is considered to be accidental.
The son of the funeral home owners told WGN News the establishment opened in 1990. While he refused to comment, he was in disbelief looking at the extensive damage.
The unfortunate incident has impacted local families who had set to grieve their loved ones at the funeral home in the coming days.
