The shooting happened around 8:30 p.m. Sunday on the 9200 block of South Harper Avenue in the Calumet Heights neighborhood.
According to police, a preliminary investigation indicates that the girl was struck by gunfire inside a residence.
She was transported to Comer Children’s Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
“I cannot begin to tell you what a horrific incident this is when a baby loses their life,” Ald. Michelle Harris (8th Ward) said. “What a horrific loss it is for the family, friends and for her schoolmates.”
The medical examiner has identified the girl as Dalilah Batey.
It’s unclear whether Batey lived in the home or was just visiting. Investigators have not disclosed the circumstances surrounding the shooting, but Harris wants to make it clear that the girl wasn’t killed by a stray bullet, stressing that this incident is unacceptable.
“It wasn’t a drive-by or a walk-by shooting, it was an internal incident that happened inside the home where a child was fatally shot,” Harris said. “It wasn’t some random person firing a gun or some random person driving down the street shooting up residents.”
No other information was released and Area Two Detectives are investigating.
