For 35 years, quartets with the Garden City Chorus have been serenading people with perfect harmonies on Valentine’s Day.
“We’re hired and we go sing for someone’s AU special loved ones and we sing two Valentine’s Day love songs,” said Bob Reichl, Lead vocalist of the Acoemeti Quartet, part of the Garden City Chorus.
The lucky recipients get the songs, a single rose and a personalized card too.
Reichl, Clarke Stanford, Buddy Kell and Jim Fernstrom make up the quartet Acoemeti. They’ve singing been together for 15 years, and said people love it when they show up to sing.
“Well, usually it stops wherever we’re at and usually people are moved. And the person who’s receiving it, it’s not uncommon that they’re moved so much that they tear up a bit. And so it’s pretty emotional and the recipients get us singing to them,” Reichl explained.
Thursday they delivered a singing Valentine to the staff at Newell Dental. Faces throughout the lobby were lit with smiles as Acoemeti sang.
“It was amazing. Dressed well and sing amazingly well. A blessing to the staff and to us with encouragement and hope and brightness on a rainy day, but also in the middle of recovery from a storm and all the other things that have happened in our area,” smiled Dr. John Newell, owner of Newell Dental.
A Valentine’s Day tradition that — while rare these days — still brings joy.
“It’s a great merge of things that have been a part of our past, but also can be a part of our future. Because music has been a part of culture forever. And it is soothing for the spirit, soothing for the soul,” sadi Dr. Newell.
