Beshear said that while the Commonwealth isn’t expecting an event like the July 2022 floods, the state is preparing for the worst and hoping for the best by taking the lessons emergency management officials learned and using them to prepare for the upcoming heavy rain.
“We’re already working with the emergency management groups in each area to be ready,” Gov. Beshear said during Thursday’s update. “This time, one thing we’re doing extra pre-positioning the swift water rescue teams because we have more knowledge of it, so we will have more boats ready to go into the water for rescues, this time at a moment’s notice in different parts of of the state, more so than we’ve ever had.”
Kentucky Emergency Management (KYEM) issued a flood safety warning on Thursday, urging caution ahead of the floods. Officials said six inches of fast-moving water can knock an adult off of their feet, 12 inches can move a vehicle, and 18-24 inches of fast-moving water can carry an SUV, or truck in its path.
