Colorado City declares state of emergency amid ongoing water crisis, school remains closed

COLORADO CITY, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – Colorado City is grappling with ongoing water troubles, including leaks, low water pressure, and frequent boil water notices—issues that led the city council to declare a water emergency on Monday, February 10.

The city has experienced prolonged water outages, and on Monday, officials announced that repairs would require shutting off water to the parts of town. In response, multiple locations have been set up for residents to access water.

Bottled water is available for pickup at the Civic Center and the Mitchell County Sheriff’s Office. For those unable to pick up water,

the city is offering delivery—residents can call City Hall at (325) 728-3463 or the Police Department at (325) 728-5294 for assistance. Additionally, water for flushing toilets is available in the parking lot at Lowes; residents should bring their own buckets or jugs.

City crews have been working since early Sunday morning to address the situation, with additional contractors brought in to assist. A boil water notice issued Sunday, February 9, remains in effect.

The city council held an emergency meeting at 4:00 p.m. Monday, where Mayor Ruben Hurt declared a state of emergency and approved emergency funds to address the water issue.

School was canceled for Colorado ISD on Monday due to a water outage. The district shared that “City workers are working tirelessly to repair multiple water line leaks, but with 75+ year-old pipes, each fix leads to new challenges.”

The Parent Advisory Committee meeting scheduled for Monday night was postponed due to no water, as well as the cancellation of school on Tuesday, February 11.

“We appreciate the hard work of city crews as they continue working around the clock to fix the issue, and we stand in full support of their efforts. CES/CMS Spring Pictures will be rescheduled, and we will share a new date soon,” the district shared online.

The Colorado City Police Department has encouraged residents to check on friends, family, and neighbors during this time.
