Abilene City Council considers new camping policies: Permits & extended stay limits

ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – The City of Abilene is considering changes to its camping policies at Sea Bee and Johnson parks, potentially extending stay limits and introducing a permit system.

For years, overnight camping has been allowed at both parks, which sit along Lake Fort Phantom Hill. Now, with the city’s growth, park staff are proposing ordinance updates to better manage the increasing demand.

The proposed changes would extend the maximum camping stay from 48 to 72 hours, aligning with the popularity of three-day weekends. Staff have also identified a need for camping permits, which would help support city marshals overseeing park activity.

If approved, a daily camping fee of $22 per night could be implemented. The Abilene City Council will discuss this proposal, along with other agenda items, at its meeting on Thursday, February 13.
