Immigration ‘bounty hunter’ bill dies in Mississippi legislature

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Mississippi bill that would have rewarded bounty hunters money to help catch undocumented immigrants has died in the state legislature.

Bounty hunters would have received $1,000 to help Immigration and Customs Enforcement in deporting people from Mississippi.

The bill was authored by a state representative from Byhalia, and had the backing of the DeSoto County district attorney.

The “bounty hunter” bill was introduced Wednesday and was defeated in a committee meeting.

There were fears the bill would lead to racial profiling.
