Whirlpool has announced that 10 states are now participating in the federal Home Electrification and Appliance Rebate initiative (HEAR).
The $6.6 billion program, part of the Biden administration’s sweeping Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), provides consumer rebates at retail for select energy-efficient appliances, including Energy Star-certified cooking products and electric heat pump dryers.
Rebates ranging from 50% to 100% (depending on household income) for a maximum of $1,680 will be available throughout the country, pending implementation of the program by individual states. New York was the first out of the gate, followed by Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Maine, Michigan, New Mexico, Rhode Island and Wisconsin. (Washington, D.C. is also on board.)
Thirty-nine remaining states have either applied for the program, are preparing their applications or already had them approved. Only South Dakota is taking a pass on the opportunity.

Appliance dealers in participating states who’d like to offer the rebates are required to:
• Make eligible appliances available for sale
• Have point-of-sale systems that can provide rebates
• Submit rebate requests to a state’s program implementer

The subsidies, which also extend to energy-efficient home upgrades, are intended to lower households’ energy costs and consumption and to encourage broader adoption of sustainable lifestyles.
