Brown County sheriff warns of phone scam impersonating deputies, demanding money

BROWN COUNTY, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – The Brown County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a phone scam where callers impersonate law enforcement, pressuring victims into buying cryptocurrency.

Sheriff Vance Hill says the scam is “plaguing” the community, with residents receiving calls from someone pretending to be from the sheriff’s office. The scammer claims the person has missed a court date and now has a warrant for their arrest. Victims are told to stay on the line, withdraw money from their bank, and deposit it into a Coinstar or similar machine to buy Bitcoin or other cryptocurrency. The caller often demands additional payments, claiming the first deposit didn’t cover the fees.

Hill emphasizes that the sheriff’s office will never call residents to make payments over the phone.

Anyone who falls victim to this scam is urged to report it to authorities.
