House Bill 1551 would create a Domestic Violence Fatality Review Board to track trends of abuse to see how to provide the best resources, whether community support groups or stricter legislation.
Mississippi is one of five states that does not have a Domestic Violence Review Board.
State Rep. Fabian Nelson (D-District 66) sponsored this year’s bill. A similar bill that was created during the last session died in committee.
“The construction of the Board will be volunteers, community advocates. We have law enforcement officers, Attorney General’s office. They’re going to all have a seat at the table. And they’re doing it because they’re passionate about this,” said Nelson.
Mississippi has 10 domestic violence shelters. Supporters of the bill said those shelters are not enough to provide services to the state’s 82 counties.
