Madera Unified responds to substitute teacher’s immigration comments

MADERA, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – Madera Unified initiated an investigation after students reported a substitute teacher making immigration-related comments during class.

Principal Sabrina Rodriguez at Matilda Torres High School sent a message to parents, saying a substitute teacher engaged in a political discussion with students on topics related to immigration and immigrants.

During this discussion, the substitute teacher allegedly expressed their views related to these topics – views the district says do not align with theirs or the school.

Part of the message sent to parents on Monday reads:

As soon as students raised concerns, our school administrators took immediate action to address the situation and ensure a safe and supportive learning environment for all. School administration worked closely with the district office to investigate the matter. We are following established investigative and personnel processes to conduct a fair and thorough review based on evidence.
Principal Sabrina Rodriguez

The school continues on to say personal politics of adults have “no place in our classrooms.” The Madera Unified District agreed, adding “Our classrooms are intended to be inclusive spaces guided by California State Standards in a nonpartisan manner.”

Madera Unified also says “Students were encouraged to reach out to their counselor or an administrator if they needed any type of support” following the incident.

The identity of the substitute teacher is unknown at this time.
