On November 28, 2023, police responded to a report of a hit-and-run involving a pedestrian. Upon arrival at the intersection of South 7th Street and Alameda Road, officers found a man lying on his back. According to court documents, the vehicle involved had fled the scene.
Court documents reveal that the man told police he was crossing South 7th Street at a crosswalk when an unknown vehicle struck him on his right side. A witness also reported hearing a “thump” sound as she was preparing to turn onto Alameda, and she saw a black sedan speeding away from the scene.
The witness also provided dashcam footage, which revealed that a white vehicle traveling east on South 7th Street slowed to allow the pedestrian to cross. According to the documents, a black vehicle, which was behind the white car, changed lanes, passed it, and struck the pedestrian while he was still crossing. The black vehicle then continued eastbound. The pedestrian was treated for minor injuries at a nearby hospital and later released.
Records show that in December 2023, officers were traveling down South 7th Street in search of possible surveillance footage when they noticed a man working on a black vehicle in the 5300 block. The man was identified as Viniyasi Gahoro, the owner of a black Audi convertible.
According to the police report, Gahoro admitted to being the driver of the vehicle when he drove around a “stopped” car and struck the pedestrian. Records indicate that Gahoro “appeared to blame the other vehicle for stopping where it should not.” He also stated that he didn’t know what he had hit but speculated that it could have been “people.”
Court records indicate that Gahoro also mentioned poor lighting conditions at the time of the incident, while an officer noted that the crosswalk markings were faded and worn.
On January 30, 2025, Gahoro was booked into the Taylor County Jail on a $35,000 bond for a collision involving injury.
