Thalia Mara Hall doesn’t meet standards to reopen: State Fire Marshal

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Thalia Mara Hall was expected to reopen on Friday, January 31, but the State Fire Marshal’s Office said the building does not meet the standard to reopen.

The facility closed in August 2024 after mold and other safety issues were discovered.

State Fire Marshal and Insurance Commissioner Mike Chaney said his office conducted a follow-up walkthrough at Thalia Mara Hall on Thursday, January 30.

According to Chaney, some fire safety issues have been fixed, but others are still being addressed.

“For example, fire curtains have not been installed; maintenance and inspection paperwork was not available for the elevator and escalators; the fire alarm system is showing trouble and there’s no timeline on when it may be fixed; the sprinkler system needs to be inspected and tested; and fire suppression tools need to be properly tagged,” Chaney stated.

He said when the City of Jackson has addressed those safety concerns, another walkthrough will be scheduled.
