Longtime Lakeland Volunteer Steven Snow Passes Away at 78

Steven A. Snow, a dedicated volunteer and advocate for the city of Lakeland, peacefully passed away on Tuesday, December 31, 2024, at the age of 78. Surrounded by his close family, Mr. Snow left behind a lasting legacy of community service and civic engagement.

Mr. Snow, a resident of Lakeland for many years, was best known for his role as vice-chair of the Lakeland Parks and Recreation/Natural Resources Board. His tireless efforts and passionate advocacy led to numerous improvements in the city’s parks and recreation system, making them more accessible and enjoyable for all residents. His influence extended beyond parks and recreation, as he was a fervent supporter of Lakeland schools, despite not having children in the new school system.

In addition to his civic duties, Mr. Snow was the creative force behind the popular Facebook page “Home Groan Puns,” which boasts over 500,000 members. His humor and wit endeared him to a wide audience, providing a platform for light-hearted entertainment.

Mr. Snow was also instrumental in organizing the Tour de Lakeland, an event that once brought together various non-profit organizations and attracted a large crowd. The event showcased the vibrant spirit of Lakeland as cyclists traversed the town, celebrating community and collaboration.

Born in a family that moved frequently during his childhood, Steven Snow eventually found his permanent home in Memphis when his father was assigned to the Millington Naval Base during his high school years. He attended Millington High School, graduating in 1964, and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in history and political science from Memphis State University in 1970.

Steven Snow was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Dorris Snow of Lakeland, TN.

His contributions to Lakeland and his unwavering commitment to bettering the community will be remembered by all who knew him. His legacy of service, humor, and dedication will continue to inspire future generations.
