Exciting Developments Set to Shape Lakeland in 2025

Lakeland’s progress under Mayor Josh Roman’s leadership over the past two years has been significant, and 2025 is poised to bring even more transformative developments across the city.

A major highlight is the groundbreaking of the YMCA Lakeland Recreation Center, to be constructed on the former Econo Lodge site, demolished in early 2024. This state-of-the-art facility is anticipated to serve as a cornerstone for community activities and wellness programs. More about that story can be read here. The center is slated for completion in early 2027 and promises to enhance the quality of life for residents.

The city’s dining scene is also poised for growth. Among the notable additions is Sakura, a new restaurant set to open at the former McDonald’s location adjacent to the Mobil station on Canada Road. Additionally, several new eateries are expected at Lakeland Town Square, with announcements anticipated in the first quarter of 2025. Rumors have circulated suggesting the popular East Memphis restaurant Bog & Barley could be coming to Lakeland Town Square, however, developer Vince Smith said he could not comment at this time when contacted by Lakeland Currents. Lakeland Town Square may also see the introduction of medical and dental services, further diversifying its offerings.

The Ashmont Project, a mixed-use development at the intersection of Canada Road and Davies Plantation Road, continues to advance with residential underground work underway. Long-discussed plans for a high-end grocery store and other businesses could see announcements as early as March of 2025. The project’s design includes a hotel, restaurants, retail spaces, and other businesses, making it one of Lakeland’s most closely watched developments.

Meanwhile, The Lake District continues to evolve under new ownership, with remaining retail bays drawing interest. The city has also announced plans to lease space within the development, including a potential location for a Shelby County Sheriff’s Office.

Residents are optimistic about the rapid changes taking place throughout Lakeland. With the combined potential of the city’s “big three” developments—The Lake District, Lakeland Town Square, and Ashmont—Lakeland is on track for a vibrant future that promises to enhance its appeal for both residents and visitors.
