City of Lakeland Gears Up for Imminent Snowstorm

The City of Lakeland is fully prepared for the heavy snowstorm predicted to hit the area starting Thursday evening. Michael Walker, Lakeland’s City Manager, confirmed the city’s readiness during an interview with Lakeland Currents.

“We have our equipment ready to roll out as needed, including both salt and plow trucks and a 500-gallon brine tank,” Walker stated. “Our dedicated Public Works team will begin Thursday morning laying brine on bridges, high-traffic roadways, and around schools. If freezing rain occurs, our team will deploy salt and plow trucks throughout Lakeland. We are also on standby for any downed trees over the weekend.”

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning effective from 6 p.m. Thursday through 6 a.m. Saturday, with significant snowfall expected. Walker praised the city’s Public Works team for their commitment, noting their sense of duty during challenging weather events. “Our team receives a lot of job gratification in events such as these, and they are prepared and excited for the opportunity to be of service to their community and home. This gratification comes from seeing instant results of their efforts, and knowing they are helping potentially save our residents’ lives” he said.

Earlier this week, Lakeland Mayor Josh Roman reassured residents that contingency plans are in place. He highlighted discussions with Memphis Light, Gas, and Water (MLGW) regarding preparations for extreme conditions. Mayor Roman addressed concerns about water supply issues, noting that if water pressure falls below 20 psi, a precautionary boil water advisory could be issued for Lakeland and the Memphis metro area. However, he expressed confidence in MLGW’s enhanced infrastructure.

“MLGW has significantly improved its capacity since last year,” Roman stated. “With additional wells and increased pumping capabilities, they are better equipped to manage potential challenges.”
